Walkthrough video in production
Real screen, real clicks, fake Soldier. Until it is up, the written steps below are the walkthrough.
- Script
- Voice
- Real-screen capture
- Published
Filmed on the live system with a CAC, every name and number swapped for a test Soldier before recording.
Step by step
- 01
Set up your CAC first
Your reader and DoD certificates must work. See the guide on setting up your CAC reader at home.
- 02
Go to webmail
Type webmail.apps.mil into the address bar yourself. For Teams, go to dod.teams.microsoft.us.
- 03
Sign in with your CAC
Click 'Sign in with CAC/PIV'. Pick the 'Authentication' certificate and enter your PIN.
Picking the wrong certificate is the most common reason sign-in fails.
- 04
Answer the stay-signed-in prompt
You will see a Yes or No prompt each time. That is normal.
- 05
Fix the time zone
Webmail may show Zulu time. Go to Settings, General, Language and time to set your time zone.
- 06
Stay in the browser
On personal computers, the Outlook and Teams apps are not supported on purpose. Use the browser.
- 07
Handle attachments
Your home computer may block downloading or printing attachments. Ask the sender to send the file through DoD SAFE (safe.apps.mil).
- 08
Still blocked?
Some home internet settings block the site. Changing your DNS to Quad9 or Cloudflare fixed it for some users.
Why it gets kicked back
- ! Old @mail.mil addresses are now @army.mil.
- ! The Outlook and Teams apps do not work on personal computers.
- ! The attachment rule has changed over time and may depend on your device. If it blocks you, use DoD SAFE.
- ! The Reserve help desk web portal only works on the Army Reserve Network. Call instead.
- ! Want email on your phone? Since May 2025 the Army lets you use the Outlook and Teams apps on a personal Apple, Samsung or Google Pixel phone (Intune MAM). Hypori is the other phone option. See the guide on Army 365 on your phone.
- ! Need a full Army desktop at home? Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) runs in your browser at client.wvd.azure.us/arm/webclient/index.html after you sign up. It still needs a CAC reader.
- ! The AVD sign-up link in the 2024 Army slides (armyconnect.me/go/avd-setup) is dead. Search 'AVD onboarding' on the Army 365 home page with your CAC instead.
